Droughts and Flooding Plains

Australia is very much a country of contrasts. “Droughts and Flooding Plains” is mentioned often in the talk of politicians to everyday people, especially the farmers.

It comes from a line of this poem, in the second stanza:
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of rugged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding plains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

The full poem “My Country” can be read here.
I remember when I was young learning the song "I Love A Sunburnt Country".

We saw the evidence of great contrast earlier this year, while the same time Victoria suffered devastating bushfires, further north in Queensland and New South Wales, there was extreme floods.

We have had days of rain here and all the water ways are just overflowing. Our dam in the lower paddock has banked right back through the paddock. Water is racing from our dam, out through a creek and into the Wilgarup River.
The first two photo’s are of our dam, then water logged paddocks further down from us, right over the road from the Wilgarup River.

These photo's are of the Wilgarup River, near the old Dingup Church.

My friend Elaine is having a “45th entry”giveaway on her blog.

  1. I am on the opposite side of Australia to you, Susan and it is pouring rain here at the moment. Our dams are only about 26% full, so we need every drop we can get.

Great to hear your dam is overflowing. Has much damage been caused by all the rain? I hope the flood waters subside for you soon.

  4. Although beautiful, your photos are somewhat frightening as well, Susan. Flooding can cause much damage and I hope that you are spared and that the waters will soon recede.

I've been without a computer for 8 days so I'm just now catching up on reading my favorite blogs. I hope your children are well now. Take care.

  5. Beautiful images! Thank you for sharing!

Susan, thank you for being a part of my blog! I am so sorry, but until now, I have, for some reason, been unable to see your posts.

So, forgive my delay in welcoming you and commenting.

Your blog is wonderful and inspiring. And I love Australia. I have never been there, but love the pictures and the people.

Do take care. And many blessings to you.

  7. Thank you Almighty God for that rain, please prevent further flooding and please send more safe steady rain in due season....and please have mercy on Victoria and send us safe steady rainful from here in on to fill our dams again...that people will wonder at what the Almighty can do......."If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves....and pray."
Humbling involves returning to God in repentance.
May this drought call people back to our creator.
